A new translation of Machiavelli's political classic argues that the work was an attack on the advice-books for princes published by his contemporaries as well as a response to the world of Florentine politics.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition. Product Description Classic guide to acquiring and maintaining political power is refreshing in its directness, yet often disturbing in its cold practicality. Starkly relevant to the political upheavals of the 20th century, this calculating prescription for power remains today, nearly 500 years after it was written, a timely and startling lesson in the practice of autocratic rule that continues to be much read and studied by students, scholars and general readers. .com Review When Lorenzo de' Medici seized control of the FlorentineRepublic in 1512, he summarily fired the Secretary to the SecondChancery of the Signoria and set in motion a fundamental change in theway we think about politics. The person who held the aforementionedoffice with the tongue-twisting title was none other than NiccolMachiavelli, who, suddenly finding himself out of a job after 14 yearsof patriotic service, followed the career trajectory of many modernpoliticians into punditry. Unable to become an on-air politicalanalyst for a television network, he only wrote a book. But what abook The Prince is. Its essential contribution to modernpolitical thought lies in Machiavelli's assertion of the thenrevolutionary idea that theological and moral imperatives have noplace in the political arena. "It must be understood," Machiavelliavers, "that a prince ... cannot observe all of those virtues forwhich men are reputed good, because it is often necessary to actagainst mercy, against faith, against humanity, against frankness, against religion, in order to preserve the state." With just a littleimagination, readers can discern parallels between a 16th-centuryprincipality and a 20th-century presidency.--Tim Hogan --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.
