From Booklist
“Every dog at Hilltop Farm was a winner.” Some win agility contests, some for sheepherding, and some even get Best in Show—except for Sal, the Portuguese water dog. She can swim, but nobody gives medals for swimming. With her mother’s encouragement, Sal is determined to be the “Swimmingest Dog in the World.” She practices in the creek, the bathtub, the plastic pool; she even attempts to join the local swim team but is kicked out. Frustrated by the No Dogs Allowed sign now hung on the gate to the pool, she figures her dreams are over. As luck would have it, though, an injured girl can’t swim in the swim-meet relay race. Sal to the rescue. Although the paintings are somewhat flat, DePalma creates a winsome protagonist in both the full-page illustrations and the smaller images set in the text, and the swim team is refreshingly multiethnic. With perfect publication timing regarding the announcement that the First Dog will be a Portuguese water dog, this title is sure to please dog lovers. Grades K-2. --Patricia Austin
