Rand's vigorously laissez-faire views, though never in a strident oroverly dogmatic way.Lowell Wiltbank became acquainted with Greenspan through Objec-tivist circles and later joined Townsend-Greenspan, where he rose fromphotocopy machine operator to senior staff economist. He recallsRand's pervasive influence on the firm. "There was an absolute rule atTownsend-Greenspan. No communication that came out of the firmshould ever be interpreted to advocate any expansion of governmentinterference in the economy. If we advocated anything in terms of gov-ernment policy, it was deregulation."While Burns, Parker, and Rand were instrumental in Greenspan's de-velopment, he was more than the sum of these influences. A commandof data was a gift that came naturally to him. In a curious way, it canalso be seen as a logical alternative to his failed career in music. Musicinvolves a progression of notes marching toward a satisfying conclu-sion. Data, as well, are meant to be arranged in a series that tells a com-pelling story and achieves resolution. As Greenspan would later tell theNew York Times Magazine: "I get the same kind of joy from solving ahard mathematical problem as I do from hearing a Haydn quartet."Economic consulting also appealed to Greenspan's innate sense ofpragmatism. He'd left Juilliard anxious to start a career in music in lieuof taking classes on music as a career. Greenspan enjoyed rolling up hissleeves and plunging into real-world detail. A case in point: Greenspanfavored paperboard sales as an economic indicator during his time as aconsultant. Paperboard is an incredibly pervasive material, used topackage all kinds of items for shipping. If demand for paperboard wasup, Greenspan took it as a signal that economic activity was on the in-crease. Such a prosaic indicator holds scant appeal for an academiceconomist. But it has the benefit of uncanny accuracy. Greenspan wasforever adding to his toolbox of indicators. People who worked for himover the years were driven to distraction by the ever-increasing amountof data he would track.Client companies looked to Townsend-Greenspan for observationsabout economic conditions on an industry-specific basis. This wouldhelp them to make decisions about hiring, opening new factories, orinvesting in equipment. Clients also looked for available data sliced anddiced in new ways. One of Townsend-Greenspan's most sought-afterservices was monthly estimates of gross national product.
