版权页: Generally, as explained earlier in this chapter, Translators regard themselvesas serving primarily the Sender or the Client - with the exception of signed languageinterpreting, where interpreters may view themselves as serving primarily theirdeaf Receivers. They can therefore consider their task to have been successfullyperformed if they provide satisfactory communication service according to thecriteria of the Sender or the Client (or the deaf Receivers) respectively. Note that the correlation between satisfactory quality as perceived by a givencommunication actor and the level of fidelity, linguistic acceptability, clarity, orterminological accuracy of the Translator's output can be weak: setting aside issuesof assessment competence which will be taken up later in this chapter, interpreterssometimes serve mainly the purpose of adding prestige to conferences wheretheir linguistic mediation is not really necessary; at other times, they have a usefulalbeit painful role as scapegoats in diplomatic negotiations, allowing participantsto withdraw or change positions without admitting it, by claiming they have beenmistranslated; they can also serve tactical purposes by giving one of the parties innegotiations, who has understood the original statement, more time to think beforereacting. Translators have also been known to fulfil legal or administrativetranslation requirements rather than actually transfer information.
