They didnot live in cold countries because they could not keepwarm. Then they learnt howto make clothes. When an animal was killed, its skin was cut off. They wrappedthe skin around their bodies, The skins kept them warm. Skins which had fur onthem were the best. Even today some people wear the furs of animals to keepthem warm. At first men did not know how to make fire. Sometimes a forest was hit bylightning. Then a fire was started. The people took some of this fire to start a firenear their homes. A fire was very important for three reasons. It kept them warm.Wild animals were frightened by it. They did not attack when they saw a fire. Thenanother thing was discovered. When food was cooked, it tasted much better！But men still did not know how to make fire. When they had a fire, they did notlet it stop burning. If it went out, they could not start it again. They had to wait forlightning to start another fire！ Sometimes they had to wait for years！ Later, they discovered how to make fire. If you rub two pieces of woodtogether, they become hot and burn. You have to rub very fast！ One way of doingit is to make a little hole in a piece of wood. Little pieces of wood or dry leaves areput into the hole. Then the end of a stick is put into the hole. The stick is rubbedbetween the hands. This makes it burn very quickly. The end of the stick becomes very hot. Thesmall pieces of wood and dry leaves begin to burn. Another way of making fire isto knock two pieces of stone together. A spark is made. This can be used to starta fire. Nowadays we have matches. We can carry them in our pockets and make afire when we want to. Many people use heaters to keep warm. Oil heaters burnoil. Gas heaters burn gas. Electric heaters use electricity. Gas, oil and electricitycan also be used for cooking.
