Americans observe two holidays in honor of their parents: Mother's Day and Father's Day. Neither of the two is a legal holiday, however.
Mother's Day comes on the 2nd Sunday in May. In 1910,a member of a church in Philadelphia planned the Sunday morning service to honor her own mother. More and more churches, cities and states followed the example and set aside the day to honor mothers. In 1914,the day was set by an Act of Congress(议会，法令) for annual celebration. Since then, the whole country has been observing Mother's Day.
It is customary to wear a red or pink flower if one' s mother is living, or to wear a white flower if one' s mother has died.
Father's Day comes on the 3rd Sunday in June. In 1909 ,a church in Washington set aside the day to honor fathers. The custom quickly spread throughout the United States. Many Americans congratulate their fathers on this day with presents and cards of good wishes and thanks. During the autumn, some colleges celebrate Father' s Day.
