In 645 or the 1 9th year of the Zhenguan period,MonkXuan Zang carried 657 Buddhist scriptures, large numbers ofBuddha statues and South Asian flower and fruit seeds backto Chang’an,and was warmly received by Emperor Taizongand by the public.Monk Xuan Zang, declined the rewardsoffered by Emperor Taizong, and immediately set to work onhis 19一year long mission to translate the Buddhist Scriptures. He was the first one to use the name“India”which meansa place of moonlight.Moonlight is a poetic symbol in Buddhism.Buddhists regard truth as like bright moonlight, which soaks into the world and into people’S soul.MonkXuan Zang translated 75 books on the Theory of Buddhist Scriptures, amounting to some 1,335 volumes and more than13 million words. Then he dictated what he had seen and heard on his 25,000一kilometer journey in quest of Buddhist scriptures-a journey that had lasted some 17 years. On the 5th day of the second lunar month in 664(the first year ofthe Linde period in the Tang Dynasty),Monk Xuan Zang, who was then 64 years old, passed away in Yuhua Temple after completing his great mission. When he was buried, more than a miHion people walked in the funeral procession along a 220一kilometer long road.
Even though the Tang Dynasty was still in its glorious stage,Monk Xuan Zang was worried about what he saw asthe emptiness of the national spirit. He was determined to seek more spiritual knowledge and understanding and this went hand in hand with his unshakable ambition for the nation.
