The number of deaths due to fire has risen to 17 in Southern California today. Two more bodies were found in a house that burned to the ground. The identities of the dead are unknown. Firefighters say they expect to find more bodies as the fire continues to rage and more houses are destroyed. So far over 148 homes have been destroyed. A further 3 000 families have been asked to leave their homes in case the fire spreads into neighboring areas.The wildfires in California began last Thursday and continue to burn despite the efforts of hundreds of firefighters and helicopters dumping thousands of gallons of water on the blaze.Experts say the combination of strong winds and the recent drought has made the situation much more difficult to contain than last year's fires. Rain has not been predicted in the coming weeks, so if the firefighters cannot put out the blaze the risk of more homes burning and more damage being done gets higher. Authorities have asked families to pay close attention to evacuation warnings so that they do not put themselves in any danger.
Bonnie: What classes are you thinking of registering for this semester?
Sam: Well, I'm not sure yet. I have to take French 407 and Introduction to Statistics in order to graduate. I have room in my schedule for a few electives though.
Bonnie: What about this class: Basic Wildland Firefighting. It's a special course this semester being offered by the Fire Academy. Apparently they need extra firefighters in the summer to fight wildfires. This course teaches you how.
Sam: Wow. I have never thought about being a forest firefighter. What does the course description say?
Bonnie: Let's see... It says, "This course is designed to give students an introduction to the techniques, regulations and best practices of wild land firefighting. Special focus will be given to communication and teamwork for effective wildfire control. At the end of the course, students will be given the opportunity to take the WFSE (Wildland Firefighting Standard Examination) to receive certification for hiring."
Sam: Is there a course fee?
Bonnie: No, but there is a required text.
Sam: Do you think this is a good summer job? I mean, why don't you just work as a bartender like last summer?
Bonnie: Oh, I think this will be a great summer job. For one thing, you make lots of money.
My cousin does this in the summer in Arizona, and he makes a pile of money every year.
Sam: Really? That would be nice.
Bonnie: Plus, it would keep you in great shape. I don't get any real exercise as a bartender.
Sam: That's true. And it might be nice to do something outside for a change. Do you worry that it's dangerous?
Bonnie: Yeah, it probably is a little bit dangerous, but that's part of the fun! I'm going to register for the class before it fills up.
Sam: Well, if you are, I'll take it with you. It might be exciting to put out fires!
