Historically， universities were for the elites： these people were selected through exams and other systems and were expected to achieve a high position in society after graduation.This system cultivated a group of officials—seen， for example， in the Chinese ancient imperial official selection system—which led to the belief that personal and family success lay in studying and passing exams.A similar pattern could be seen in the West when only a very small percentage of the population could enter a university （percentages in single figures in the 1960s in many countries）.However now in many countries like China， Britain， and America， a much bigger proportion （around 50% or over） of school—leavers can go to study in niversities and there are many opportunities for older learners as well.In Britain， more female students are entering universities than in the past and many students are the first generation in their families to study in universities.Currently， British universities put strong emphasis on employability， transferrable skills （i.e.how the skills developed at university can be transferred to different areas of employment and life）， social inclusion and student diversity （widening the participation of students from different backgrounds）， and on the societal contribution of their students while they study at a university.
Another worldwide trend of change is that more students are studying outside their countries.In the past， students from developing countries tended to go to study in developed countries.In recent years， this is no longer the only picture， e.g.while more Chinese students study abroad in many countries in the world， China also receives international students from both developing and developed countries.Furthermore， it is becoming increasingly more common for a university from one country to run a campus or branch university in another country.
