Although this fragment is finally absent from "The Ruined Cottage", it does point to the Pedlar's once fierce fascination with Margaret's place, a fever somehow cured later by his own wisdom.Even after so many visits, when he is relating the tale of Margaret to the Poet, a grief still can be discerned in his words. He imagines that the spring feels one sadness with him: "Beside yon spring I stood, / And eyed its waters till we seemed to feel / One sadness, they and 1" (82—84).His grief, also "like a sucking babe", fastens itself on the cottage and shows a psychic greed: "But often on this cottage do I muse / As on a picture, till my wiser mind / Sinks, yielding to the foolishness of grief" (117—119).
The familial expressions which cluster around the Pedlar's narration explain why he feels so attached to Margaret's cottage plot: this place serves to him as an intimate place, a center of felt alue, especially the feelings for a home.He loves Margaret as a daughter: "I loved her / As my own child" (94—95).When he laments her death, he always tends to choose those familial images: the ousehold flowers, the chimney—wall, the everung hearth—stone blaze, and especially Margaret nursing her infant.
