LETTER TO MR A.J.FOWLER

Dear Mr Fowler，
Your letter of December 15， 1935 reached me a fortnightago.I did not write then because I was waiting for thepublication of my The Diary of a Student，a copy of which I amsending under separate cover， with a copy of my How to Use theConcise Oxford Dictionary.
Before talking about these two books， I have to inquirewhether you have received a clipping from The Chung HwaEnglish Weekly bearing my picture and a few first—person—singular paragraphs.This Weekly is devoted to the interests ofChinese students of English； its editor is an intimate friend ofmine， and I am one of its regular contributors.
As you can easily see， The Diary of a Student is a purelyfictitious one — not quite unlike The Diary of a Nobody byGeorge and Weedon Grossmith， which appeared in Punchlate in the nineteenth century.I am very glad to say that it isperhaps the only book of its kind ever published in China，though there is now no telling what fortunes it is likely tomeet with.I am afraid some readers may call me a pseudohumorist.By the way， a reviewer of my Letters to a Friendaccused the letters of ""discussion divorced from reality"" aftercalling them ""an interesting study of a 'literary friendship'between two self—educated young men"" and saying， ""Theearnest spirit in which so many of the letters are written doesnot prevent occasional humour from creeping in"".
You must be curious to know what the ten Chinesecharacters I wrote on the fly—leaf of the D／ary mean.I wrotethem because it occurred to me that you might like them.Thefirst four characters of the right line mean ""Mr Fowler"" and thefour characters of the second line mean ""presented by HertzC.K.Ke"".There are no rules for translating English propernames into Chinese， and in view of the disparity betweenChinese and English pronunciations， exact translation isimpossible.In translating your surname I have used twocharacters that mean ""blessing"" and ""come"" respectivelyand ""the coming of blessings"" as a phrase.So far as I know，we always avoid unlucky words in translating foreign propernames， and lucky words occur in some accepted translations.For instance， the three characters of the accepted translation ofKipling， the famous English author who died not long ago，mean ""lucky for one hundred years"".
