All the causes ofpain can be summarized into two categories.One is blockage of the visceral organs and meridians by pathogenic factors，leading to obstruction of qi and blood flow.In such cases，in accordance with the rule "Wherever there is obstruction，there is pain，" the pain is excessive in nature.The other is the insufficiency of qi and blood or deficiency of yin essence，either of which impairs the nourishment of the visceral organs and meridians.This time，another rule applies："Wherever there is undernourishment，there is pain，" and the pain is deficient in nature.
When inquiring of a patient who complains about pain，the questions should be raised in such a way as brings forth the necessary information on the location，nature，intensity and duration of the pain.In addition，doctors also need to learn whether the pain can be relieved by cold or heat，as well as whether it can be alleviated or exacerbated by pressure.
Patients usually complain of pain in accordance with its location，such as headache，shoulder pain， epigastric pain，hypochondriac pain，abdominal pain，lumbar pain （lumbago），or joint pain （arthralgia）.
