The principle of least effort and the economy principle propose that people tend to exert minimum amount of effort that is necessary to achieve the maximum result,or people tend to maximize the uhlity of speech through optimal distribution of linguistic resources,so that nothing is wasted.These principles mean that there are two contrary forces in communication:effort limitation versus needs satisfaction.Accordingly,MPEs are motivated by the speakers' consideration of satisfying specific pragmatic purposes rather than making propositional contribution.The speakers take extra effort to select these expressions in expectation of extra rewards.The salience of MPEs therefore is manifested in their distinct discursive status for the achievement of pragmatic purposes.
Thirdly,the salience of MPEs is reflected in the expliat reference to ongoing interactions.These expressions expliatly convey the need to manipulate ongoing interactions.Their encoded information refers to a different aspect of interactions such as the procedure,core message,and interpersonal relahons.The explicitness of the semanhc meanings encoded in MPEs signals a high degree of consaousness.
