There are many wedding traditions in the West.And some of them date back several hundreds of years and most of them have something to do with ancient beliefs.
As is known， "Something old， new， borrowed and blue" is popular.It dates back to Victorian times.Something old refers to wearing something that has a link with the bride's （新娘） family and her past life. Usually，the bride wears a piece of family jewellery or maybe her mother's or grandmother's wedding dress.Wearing something new means good luck and success in the bride's new life.Wearing something borrowed is meant to bring good luck to the marriage. It could be a handkerchief or a piece ofjewellery. Wearing something blue is considered to stand for purity.
Placing a silver sixpence in the bride's left shoe is a symbol of wealth. This is not just to bring the bride a lot of money but also a wealth of happiness and joy throughout her married life.
The tradition of carrying flowers by the bride has its roots in ancient times when it was believed that the smell of flowers would drive away evil spirits， bad luck and ill health.During Victorian times， flowers were very welcome as lovers would send messages to each other using different flowers， with each flower having its own meaning.For example， apple flower means "better things to come" ； red chrysanthemum （菊花） ， "I love you " ； forget—me—not，"true love and forever memory"； white rose， "purity"； and violet（紫罗兰） ，"faithfulness".
