In 1640 Charles I summoned Parliament, which had been closed for eleven years, to collect money to raise an army to suppress the Scots. In 1641 the bourgeoisie and a number of aristocrats drew up the "Grand Remonstrance" by which they bitterly accused the king of tyranical rule and demanded the rights of free trade and commerce. The king rejected the Remonstrance.News of the king's despotic action soon spread all over London. The merchants, craftsmen, apprentices, and labourers of London as well as the peasants in nearby villages came to support Parliament. The king fled and raised his standard against Parliament.Civil war broke out between the king and Parliament in 1642.After years of civil war the parliamentary army led by Oliver Cromwell (1599—1658) defeated the royal army.Charles I was beheaded in 1649 and England became a commonwealth.
In 1653 Cromwell became the Lord Protector, assuming the role more or less of a military dictator. It should be noted that after Cromwell achieved his victory, he suppressed the Diggers and Levellers, organized groups of the petty bourgeoisie in the cities and countryside, which included the poor plebeians and peasants who were not benefited by the revolution and who broke out into a mutiny in 1649.Cromwell also raised a huge army to plunder Ireland. The exploitation of the Irish people by the English bourgeoisie was most cruel.
