People began to use these words: brunette, coiffure, etc. After the British bourgeois revolution, the industrial revolution, and the British capitalism expansion, English was brought into other countries and regions across the globe. It had become the universal language everywhere. The United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand all made English their native language.Words from the whole world were integrated into English.Linguists' studies showed that modern English absorbed vocabulary from more than fifty languages. For instance, soy was a Japanese word and paddy was a Malay word.In terms of the word—formation, shortened words and hybrid words increased rapidly. The traditional method in which word creation mainly depended on the alternation of vowels was deserted. In this period, the British capitalistic productivity was developed rapidly and the domestic politic situation was stable. Thus, a lot of grammar books, rhetoric books and dictionaries were published. One publication, A Dictionary of English Language, was compiled by Samuel Johnson, which further promoted the standardization and normalization of English vocabulary.
In the 19th and 20th century, English experienced a historic breakthrough. It featured the rapid increase of English vocabulary volume. The scientific progress, the development of film and radio industries, and the expansion of the automobile industry brought many technological words in English, for example, relativity (the theory that space and time are relative concepts rather than absolute concepts),atomic en,ergy (the energy released by a nuclear reaction),radium (a chemical element Ra),cinema (theater),cartoon (a film made by photographing a series of cartoon drawings),radio(medium for communication),automobile (motor vehicle), spark plug (an electrical device), gearshift(a mechanical device for engaging),etc.
