Dixie Dansercoer and Sam Deltour hopedto set a new world record， they wanted to make the longest ever journey across Antarctica， without outside support or any motor vehicle.The current record is held by Norwegian explorer， Rune Gjeldnes.He travelled 4，800 kilometers in ninety days， five years ago.
Dixie and Sam started their journey on November 4，2011.The brave men aimed to travel over 6，000 km in one hundred days.It would be impossible for them to pull their heavy sleds （雪橇） on their own， so they decided to make use of the wind patterns （方式，模式） in Antarctica——and use kites to help pull their heavy sleds.This would allow them to travel an average of 60 km in a day and sometimes as much as 300 km a day.
When they set out， the pair each had a sled of 190 kg.The sleds contained food supplies，tents， kites and scientific equipment.During their trip， Dixie and Sam would measure （测量）wind patterns in order for the kites to work.They also had a task of providing information about the ice in Antarctica to scientists who study climate change.
Dixie has always had a strong love for adventure； he crossed Antarctica before in 1997.
