Management scholars Robert Tannenbaum and Warren H.Schmidt developed the continuum of leader behaviors,ranging from the autocratic (or boss—centered) approach at the extremeleft to the democratic (or subordinate—centered) approach at the extremeright.According to Tannenbaum and Schmidt, managers, in decidingwhich leader behavior pattern to adopt,need to consider forces withinthemselves(such as comfort level with the various alternatives) ,withinsubordinates(such as readiness to assume responsibility) ,and within thesituation(such as time pressures).Further work on leadership at the University of Michigan seemed to confirm the usefulness of anemployee—centered approach when compared with a more job—centered,orproduction—centered,approach.A group of researchers at Ohio State University developed another strategy for studying leadership, Theresearchers isolated a number of different leader behaviors,or styles,twostood out as particularly important: initiating structure andconsideration.The Ohio Scate researchers proposed that initiatingstructure and consideration were two independent behaviors.A leadercould be high on both,low on both,or high on one and low on the other,or could display various gradations in between.
