作者简介
王佐良（1916—1995），学者、诗人、翻译家，浙江上虞人。专于英国文学和中西文学比较研究。曾任北京外国语学院副院长、外国文学研究所所长，《外国文学》主编，国务院学位委员会外国文学评议组组长，全国政协委员，中国莎士比亚学会副会长，中国英语教学研究会会长等职。主要代表作有《英国文学史》、《英国诗史》、《英国散文的流变》、《莎士比亚绪论》等。金立群，北京外国语大学、南开大学兼职教授，博士生导师，亚洲基础设施投资银行行长。

I grieve to be outdone by Gay In my own humorous biting way.Arbuthnot29 is no more my friend，Who dares to irony pretend，Which I was born to introduce，Refined it first， and showed its use.St.John， as well as Pulteney，31 knowsThat I had some repute for prose；And， till they drove me out of date，Could maul a minister of state.If they have mortified my pride，And made me throw my pen aside；If with such talents Heaven hath blessed'em，Have I not reason to detest'em？
To all my foes， dear Fortune， sendThy34 gifts， but never to my friend：I tamely can endure the first，But this with envy makes me burst.
