We are led into a totally different kind of world as we turn to Dirichlet's contemporary and colleague, Niels Henrik Abel.
In Abel we have one of the great and original geniuses of our science, who, likeGalois, was completely devoted to problems of the most purely abstract mathemat ics, of the most general consequences. But perhaps it was only the brevity of his life, which he had in common with the great Frenchman, that prevented either of themfrom developing his talents in other directions.
Abel was born on August 5, 1802, the son of a pastor in the small Norwegian town of Finho.Raised in very reduced circumstances, he was personally shy, depressed by poverty and apparent failure. His basic disposition, in which the consumption he contracted early may have played a part, was deeply melancholic; itwas relieved only by lively contacts with his Norwegian friends and, above all, byan ever—growing enthusiasm for his own scientific productions.
We are quite precisely informed of the details of Abel's life and personalitythrough the Memorial published by the Norwegian government in 1902 for the centenary of Abel's birth, a celebration attended by mathematicians of all nations.Thisbook is a welcome supplement to the standard edition of Abel's works, published intwo volumes by Sylow and Lie in 1881.
