The Bible contains agreat variety of such forms. The Hebrew Bible is traditionally dividedinto three parts: the Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings. The Torah(or Pentateuch) comprises the first five books and contains a mixtureof narratives and legal texts. In some sections narrative predominates(Genesis, Exodus, and Numbers); in others the legal material isdominant (Leviticus and Deuteronomy). Deuteronomy is cast as thelast testament of Moses to the people, prior to his death and the entryof the people into the Land under Joshua. The Prophets containsprophetic books with both narrative and prophetic oracles, precededby the histories of Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings. These bookscontain masterpieces of story-telling, but also construct a history ofthe people with a distinctive theological perspective. The Writingscontains a mixture of psalms, proverbial material, and more historicalbooks.
The New Testament adds a number of forms to this: Gospels, whichbear considerable resemblance to contemporary biographies or 'Lives';letters, which vary from the fairly short personal communication(Philemon) to the elaborate treatise of 16 chapters in Paul's Letter tothe Romans; acts, a form recording the deeds of famous figures whichwould have many exemplars in Christian literature; and an apocalypse,Revelation, a contemporary form which enjoyed considerablepopularity in first-century Judaism. The writers and compilers of theBible, that is to say, used a variety of literary forms in which to casttheir works. Many of these forms may have had their origins in popular, oral culture, but within the tradition of biblical writing and compilationsuch literary forms became influential and constrained the way inwhich the books were written. Even the Gospel form, which may, as aparticular variation of the contemporary Life, be ascribed to Mark, wasimmediately emulated by the other canonical evangelists and by manyothers whose works were never included in the canon. The Bible bothdrew on and created literary traditions and forms.
