A vocative text doesn't simply convey certain information in a linguistic form.It is distinctive from other types of text because it always presents information with an explicit purpose: a clear appeal to the hearer or reader of the text is essential in a translation. The target text of an operative text should pfoduce the desired response in the target text receiver. The translation should employ the adaptive method, creating an equivalent effect among target text readers. With vocative texts,"it is essential that in the target language the same effect be achieved as the original in the source language"(Reiss,2004:41).That's to say,the translator has the flexibilityto depart further from the content and the form of the original than inother types of text.To be more specific, any such changes from theoriginal should not be criticized as violation of the principle of fidelity.
As regards the relation between the text type and the translation strategies,Newmark points out more definitely that"Semantic translation is used for 'expressive' texts, communicative for 'informative' and 'vocative' texts"(Newmark,1981:47).
