A mechanical device whose prime mover is an electric motor is called the electric drive system.The DC motor is better appropriate for the system that requires variable speeds, while the AC inductive motor is suitable for fixed speed system. Because of its simple structure, low price and easy maintenance, the latter is widely used in ship electric drivc system.There are two kinds of A(" inductive motors: squirrel cage type and wound rotor type.The structure of squirrel cage type motor is simple but its start-up and speed regulation is not good.The wound rotor type motor has good start-up and speed regulation quality, but its structure is complex, especially with brushes and slip ring devices. Marine motors are mostly of cage type.
