《乔治·戈登·拜伦》:Lady Caroline Lamb's infamous comment that Byron was 'mad, bad and danger-ous to know' has, rightly or wrongly, formed the basis of Byron's reputation fornearly 200 years. In this readable and lively introduction to Byron's life and work. Martin Garrettexamines Byron's poetry in the context of his short, eventful life. His work wassensational from the start - and the public association of the author with thehero of poems such as Don Juan and Childe Harold helped to make them thebestsellers of their day.However. Byron's position as the toast of society was eclipsed by public disgrace.not helped by the scandal of the breakdown of his marriage, the birth of a daugh-ter to his half-sister Augusta. and Lady Caroline Lamb who spread rumonrs of hisunnatural practices'. He spent most of the last ten years of his life travelling inEurope. and when he died in 1824 aged thirty-six, his memoirs were burnt byfriends who wished to protect his reputation from more scandal.Fortunately, his personal and poetic' legacysurvives to challenge, outrage and delightposterity, and in this new biography Garrettbrings to life one of the most infamousliterary figures of the nineteenth century.

Dramatic behaviour was even more the forte of Margarita Cogni, whom he metin the summer of 1817 while riding near Villa Foscarini, the house he leased for sixmonths at La Mira on the Brenta. (The banks of the canal were the traditional summerretreat of the Venetian nobility, and are still lined with fine palaces. Villa Foscarini, however, later became a post office.) Afornarina, or baker's wife, she attracted him by hersheer confidence as well as her looks. She became his housekeeper at Palazzo Mocenigo, the sprawling house on the Grand Canal which he leased in 1818 and 1819 and filledwith fourteen servants and a menagerie of monkeys, a fox, and mastiffs. Here sheknocked down her rivals amid 'great confusion - and demolition of head dresses andhandkerchiefs'; 'she was the terror of men, women and children, for she had the strengthof an with the temper of Medea. She was a fine animal - but quite untameable',Byron claimed to Murray after Margarita had - following failed attempts to knife him and to drown herself in the canal - finally accepted that their liaison was over.
